So I'm looking at getting some use out of my Necrons again and using them as Thousand sons seems reasonable, until I come accross the units that one list contains and the other doesn't (I want some pylons goddamnit).
I know we messed about with the Necrons around Christmas time, and the general feeling was that they were a bit OTT, although wether this was due to our collective inexperience with them or not I don't know.
I'd quite like to try using the list again, but was just looking to get some opinions before rocking up with it and feeling like a nobber half way through the game!

The consensus opinion of the world wide community seems to be they are horrible when you first play against them, but become just another list when you work out how they play.

I like it.

It's hard to judge the power level because it's a very different type of army and takes some getting used to. However I'd probably say it's about right maybe just a bit too overpowered. I found it ok to play against as Iyanden and was beaten by my opponent and my own mistakes but they're a strong FF army. Against a more balanced army they may prove to be a bit too powerful.

My only real bug-bear is living metal. I can see the idea behind it - to keep the portals safe till they can actually be used to bring units out of. The problem though, comes when you start tacking on WEs and things, as it then goes from 5 or 6 portals to being portals, pylons, War barques and C'Tan, making almost everything, with the exception of the infantry that you can't shoot at till they deploy, practically indestructable. Combined with the fact that you can teleport the entire army wherever you want, it means you get very little opportunity to muller the portals before they get to you, making the living metal a bit OTT.

If this were to change I'd be in favour of an Eldar holofield style save - where the first save is immune to MW/TK but the second is subject to the status of the weapon firing - leaving monoliths etc subject to MWs and normal shots as per usual but gives a save against TK weapons (Some armies, in particular marines, do pay a fairly hefty premium for those MWs and these are ones that usually struggle with War engines too). With 4+ RA and thick rear armour this still makes them the toughest AVs in the game.

Other than that though I like the necron list and look forward to playing it again.

I like having the new list to play with, its nice to have a change.

The list is pretty good, I did make the point to Mark that about 2k of a 3k list seems to write itself leaving you just a little bit of room for variety (assuming you want things like a Supreme Commander and some AA).

They play style is also very different (between both games I have only actually deployed one unit on the ground, which was a Garrison off the tomb complex) and does run it's own risks (the combination of Low SR and the chance of BMs means that most of the time your oppoent can run from / break some of your Portal formations).

When it works, it's nasty, the only planning you have to do to pull of a good engagement is basically 'is something 45cm away from those Monoliths / 65 cm away from that Warbarque?' And then pass the initiative tests to do a retain (I know this isn't too dissimilar to Marines with air assaults but you don't run the AA risks).

Pylon AA is a bit specialised I think Squadons of fighters have a better time of flying through it than things like Thunderhawks, but on the other hand this offers a chance to chew up broken formations before they phase out.

I think I'll play a few more games before I write it off as too good - I think it's probably different enough to change the meta game slightly which is only a good thing imho!

Please don't think I'm writing it off as too good. I like the list, a lot.

Since we're focussing on the negative aspects and what parts would help to balance it a bit better, the only thing I can really think of is living metal. It's a good idea but IMO needs a touch of refinement.

Changing down from the current rules to the holofield esq save would bring the power level down a tad, (And/or be less frustrating for armies that have paid a premium for MW attacks but don't get to use them against 'Crons - which is the real thing about the rule that sticks in my craw) do away with a complicated table but still leave the list with the hardest AVs in the game.

To be fair though, I don't see this as a negative thing. It's certainly no different to a lot of armies including webway beased Eldar and marines air assault but without as many of the risks - that's a plus point in it's favour IMO, it's a different style which is the whole point of a new list, otherwise you might as well keep running them as TSs.
