Okay I have 1 question and a request for help.

Gunners are the only pirate henchmen able to select a handgun from the gunners armoury, however would it be possible for a gunner to buy said handgun and then later after a battle give it to a normal henchmen?

I think it would be possible as the item is already bought and is part of the warbands equipment. I guess it's like a parent buying some beer from the supermarket and then allowing their underage kid have some at home.

Now for my request. Warbands are allowed 1 unique fluffy special rule providing it is balanced, right? Well I'm struggling to think of something due to my lack of experience, so any suggestions would be great. Anything piratey or voodoo orientated would be fab.

Some good suggestions Spider_mat, there's already special item purchases and skills regarding hooks, peg legs and parots though.
I really like the voodoo doll idea though and fits in with the fluff perfectly, I could even model up a little doll thingy too. How would the other players feel about it though? I quite like the idea of an off shore bombardment from 'The Inferno' but perhaps that might be a little too powerful.
I think other peoples special rules have been to do with post game experience and recruiting etc.
Earlier chat about special rules were inspired from the Goonies ( the truffle shuffle or "hey you guys" in particular) any ideas about these?

About your question: henchmen and heroes can only use the weapons listed in the equipment table they select their weaponry from when recruited. So, you can swap weapons between different models provided they both have said weapon(s) among the ones available to them. Heroes can, later in the campaign, gain a skill that allows them to use any weapon, while henchmen (as they don't get skills) will never able to use other weapons. And since we are at it: the miscellaneous equipments you buy on the market can only be used by heroes.

Special "fluffy" rule...mhm...if I'm not wrong you already have peg legs, hooks and parrots in the pirate rules, right?
Then I'll go for the voodoo side...
What about:
- if you loose a henchmen you can replace it for free with a zombie, provided your Captain passes a Toughness test
- on 9+ on 2D6 (roll at the beginning of the game) you curse one randomly determined enemy model who will suffer a -1 penalty an all of its roll to hit

I think the voodoo doll idea has legs (figuratively speaking:)). A randomly determined model would be the fairest way, or the opposition leader would be pincushioned every game! How about this -

A character carrying a voodoo doll can use it to attack a randomly determined enemy model, during the shooting phase, by sticking a pin into a location on the doll, each location having a different effect as described below. If the model uses the doll it may not move or shoot a ranged weapon or cast a spell (it already is in a way!) that turn. If charged, the character can defend itself, but cannot use the doll in the turn it was charged or in subsequent turns if it is still engaged in hand to hand combat.

Choose the location and make a leadership test on 2D6 with the following modifiers,

-1 per standing or stunned enemy model within 8"

If successful the effect works immediately. If unsuccessful, the model may attempt to use the doll in subsequent turns, as if the doll was being used for the first time. If the leadership test results in 12 before or after modification, the character suffers D3 S(target S) hits as the voodoo spell inflicts a pyschic lashback because the character lost concentration during the attack.

After a successful attack, the doll becomes atuned to that enemy model's aura and you may continue to attack the same model without making further leadership tests. If you want to attack a different model, treat as if the doll was being used for the first time, randomly determining the enemy model. The character may use the voodoo doll as long as he/she is not stunned, knocked down or out of action.

The voodoo doll is lost if the character is killed, captured, or otherwise would lose his weapons and equipment. The voodoo doll does not have a cost and does not contribute to the warband's rating in any way.

legs reduces M by 1/4 (rounding up)
arms reduces (1-2 WS, 3-4 BS, 5-6 S) by 1
body reduces T by 1
head same effect as madness

Not sure if that covers all situations, but a play test or two will help sort out confusions. Do the pros and cons balance do you think? Are the effects on the target too much or too little?

I'm really liking all these suggestions fellas, it's actually going to bf hard to choose just one
I think there's sea shanty rules available (ill post a link to where I found I'll the rules etc I know of) as a skill which improve leadership or panic tests I seem to remember, your suggestion look like they could be more effective though.

am not shure about it beeing able to be used every turn i think maby it takes a turn to cast and takes effect in the folowing turn and lasts untill the u try to use it again

also what type of item slot woould it take up? i would say it takes the place of a ranged item thus only alowing you to take 1 ranged weapon and the doll

good points mate, they need clarification.
When the doll is used, it replaces the chance to attack with ranged weapons or hand-to-hand weapons, so does not take up any 'slots' because nothing else is being used (imagine the character merely holstering its pistol or sheathing its sword and pulling out the doll from a pocket).

As for how many times the doll can be used, I think what I meant to get across was -

You may attempt to use the doll as many times as you can/wish.
If the doll works, it is up to the dolls owner how long the effect lasts for. To cancel an effect, merely state that the dolls owner is removing the pins and therefore removing the effect. Alternatively, target a new model and during the next shooting phase roll to see if you can use the doll. If successful, the new target is affected and the old target returns to normal.
Only one enemy model can be affected at any one time.
Whilst the doll is being used, the dolls owner may do nothing other than move at normal rate in the movement phase as it takes both hands to hold the doll and stick pins in.

These are ideas I'm having now as I think about it. I think that maybe the character cannot run or charge whilst using the doll?
What about taking a turn to re-charge or something if you cancel the dolls effects to represent the character returning to total awareness and recovering from the mental effort. A limit on consecutive turns of use based on characters T or I or half Ld rounding down.

every model can carry 2 combat and 2 ranged wepions into battel

witch weapon slot would the doll take up?

and i like the idea of the model usein the doll is medatateing and then either carnt do anything or has his actions reduced

but for warbands who rely on speed its gona be a serious negativ on thair efectivness

During the campagn after each game the winner can explore the area and buy special items which don't take up weapon slots such as lucky charms etc, so the doll is just an extension of this.

Regarding the effect on movement I think the reduction is fair as it is the same on any type of warband its used against, so fast enemies will still move quick ie a skaven with a -1 movement penalty is still quicker than a human with a -1 movement penalty. Any warbands which have a low movement rate should be compensating in other ways anyway ie should be very shooty or tough. As for the other effects I think the more experienced guys will have to have their say on that.

I'm really liking all the suggestions though. Willy is supposed to have a gift for the dark arts and fully trained by Mama Mambo, and as I cant decide between them maybe before each game a roll should be made to see what voodoo power is invoked? 1-2 voodoo doll, 3-4 d3 zombies raised, 5-6 something else?

If we looked at spells - for example the chaos Dark Blood spell dishes out D3 S5 hits as a ranged attack with a drawback effect on the caster, enough to take a multi-wound model out of action in one go!
As for M, I guess if M is reduced by 1/4 both human and skaven will be 3", which isn't right is it? So maybe -1 on M yeah.

Okay I'm reopening this special rule debate.
My thoughts were that One Eye'd Willy has a gift for Voodoo as taught by Old Mama Mambo and therefore could count as a warlock rather than Mama Mambo being a member herself, therefore not effecting the WB rating etc.

I've gone through the various magic tables and selected those which seem to be fluffy enough. Using rules for magic seemed to be good as they are naturally balanced. Am I right in thinking that spells are chosen by random on a D6 and a 2D6 is rolled to see if the spell is successfully cast when rolled equal to or higher than the spells difficulty? All these rules mean that any result has been decided by the dice gods and what's fairer than that?

Before the start of the battle a D6 is rolled to see if Willy has remembered to bring along his voodoo bag of tricks. On a result of a 1 he's left them in his other jacket and will be unable to use his magic.

Anyway here's the magic table:

1. Curse, difficulty 6
One enemy model within 12" of Willy must re-roll all successful dice rolls for the duration of this and their turn.

2. Dust of the blind, difficulty 9
One enemy model within 16" is struck instantly blind, they may not shoot charge or run, are at half WS and will move in a random direction at the start of their turn.

3. Cure, difficulty 6
All friendly models within 6" have a single wound healed. In addition any stunned or knocked down model may immediately stand up.

4. Reanimation, difficulty 5
One model that went out of action during the last hand to hand combat or shooting phase immediately returns to the battle. Place the model within 6" of the caster. The model cannot be placed straight into hand to hand combat.

5. Spell of Awakening, difficulty Auto
If an enemy hero is killed (ie your opponent rolls 11-16 on the serious injury chart after the battle) then Willy may raise him to fight as a Zombie in his servitude. The dead hero retains characteristics and all his weapons and armour but may not use any other equipment or skills. He may not run, count as a henchmen group on his own and may not gain experience. This spell always succeeds and the new zombie follows all the normal zombie rules (immune to poison, causes fear etc) except for retaining characteristics, weapons and armour.

6. Voodoo doll, difficulty 7
One enemy model on the table is randomly chosen and falls victim to the small stuffed effergy stored in one of Willy's many pockets.
D3 Result
1-3 The hapless chap is struck down in terrible pain. The model is knocked down for this and their next turn.
4-6 Willy takes control of the model for his own bidding for this and his opponents next turn

I will also rise the chances he forgets it to 1-2 (because I'm mean )
More, I will rise the difficulty for Voodo Doll at 9 and changing the 1-3 result to stunned. Why? Changing 1-3 to stunned so that we just follow the book rules, instead of having to remember a single model is knocked down for two turns. Doing so, of course, makes the spell more effective, then the rise in difficulty.

Hi Matt remember were allowed a unique and fluffy special rule for the campagn. And you actually suggested the wizard idea to me matt durng our practice game. I liked this idea making willy a part time wizard mainly because it fit my background fluff and well we just had so many ideas it's too hard to pick just one and pirates are hardly a top level warband, they have fairly restricted numbers, stats and equipment.

Looking back I agree with victors suggestions about raising difficulties. Rolling for the spell before the battle perhaps would be better,but would also mean that there wouldn't be much variety in the game cutting down on the fun aspect. Don't forget I have to roll in game anyway to see which spell is chosen and again to see if it's successfully casts, so the likelyhood of a spell being cast anyway is quite low, especially with my luck!
