So after laying my eyes on the BA codex for the first time there were many omg moments going through it, i decided to dig out my old rhino rush BA army and put it together.

Many of my first play test were based around preds, razorbacks and the libby.

What i found:

Libby: 5+ cover save and preferred enemy has to be the choice when in a LR, and thats manly where ive stuck him!

Assault termies: What were they thinking when they priced those TH/SS at 5pts! tendency to be overly survivable with priests, as in the priest is surplus to the squads requirement, especially when in a LR

San Priests: They are overpriced! before someone shoots me its from my experince and when used in a list manly consisting of units of 5 and heavy mech/pred. These guys are obviously essential if ur running 30-40+ marines but i would definatly go as far as saying 1-2 max. I tried one popped in a LR (ie the termy squad got out without him) and used the large hull of the LR to extent his reach, it worked but its not ideal!
On a side not Corbulo is worth his weight in gold! hes a 2w, 5a, s6 rending on the charge and hes got a 2+ feel no pain, ontop of being a decent CC unit hes reroll of one dice has endless possiblities

Tact squads: why did they bother putting them in the dex?

Assualt squad: as most of u know, they are going to be the stable of all BA lists! a 35 pt discount on transports without jump packs brings there basic cost to 65pts! including a sergent, ive never seen anything like it, cant get 5 marines cheaper than that! altho the cost effectiveness goes down alot if you add more men so id suggest 5 man!

Death Company: rollarcoster ride with these guys, first i loved them, then not so much, then they did badly, then well........ the one thing ive learnt from DC over the last few games is dont bother with them unless ur going to use a chaplin!
ALLWAYS use a Chaplin, this makes even a 5 man DC into a combat machine!
go easy on the CC weapons, powerfist is a bit to much and doesnt have a use if ur running termies, an extra power weapon is handy but nethier are required.

DC dread: worth the points and with fleet its awesome off a Raven hawk!

Razorbacks: well at 55 pts they are a bargin and a half, TL HFlamer is defo the best cheap option, always handy with the 12" move and fire. One important lesson ive learnt from TL Lascannon razorback are that once the armour is gone (rarely) and even when ur up against light armour etc that Lascannon + TL plasmagun is SSSSSOOOOO much better. never pick a TL LAs over Las+TL plas, it has saved me so many times, not to mention more shots etc etc, it is simply amazing.

Vangaurd Vets: ran these guys a couple of times, with heroic intervention, ill put it nicely leave them on the shelf at home, to expensive and (at least with my rolling) 1D6 is something not good enough!

Baal Pred: Didnt really buy into the pred, i cant see why i need to buy a 13 11 10 tank with s6 ap 3 flamer for 115 when a 55 pt 11 11 10 tank s5 ap 4 TL can fill the same role for half the points! and thats really important tho, the baal pred is only as hard as a razorback! u always have ur side armour exposed and the 13 front is rarley used!

Pred: everyone knows- 135- 2 Lascannons and an autocannon- cant go wrong!

Ravenhawk Gunship: 200 pt not a bargin, its been covered to death, good support vehicle and lots of shots turn 1!

Vindicator: this has to be the surprise package of the army! i used it as cannon fodder but the 12" move/shoot makes it twice as good, it gives u the range which vindcators have always lacked!

Essentials: Assault squads, Razorbacks, Predators
Got to have: TH/SS termies
Ill never leave home without it: Vindicator
Rubbish bin: Tac squads, Special Characters but Corbulo (unless ur basing ur army around them ie dante or astroath) Baal Preds
Best tips: Chaplin +DC, Lascannon/TL plasma gun better than TL lascannon on razorback, dont over kill ur termy squad, infact 5 on there own is enough!

So after alot of play testing here goes my 1750 list

Agree with everything you said (i love the ba book) bar a few things:

Baals: are hit and miss but a flazor back does not do the same job for cheaper- 2 reasons - ap 3 and scout. The baal is the back line clearer for everything bar sit at home 2+ save infantry (and who has those!!!) im thinking grots and the other usuall suspects that just sit there winning games as everything else rushes forwards - it can flame turn one too if need be with scout (say those lootas that will make a mess of your day). Mine will outflank most of the time and burn the occupants from those transports my las has opened up, and if thier not oppened yet....then do not underestimate an 18 inch baal ram to the rear armour >. I can certainly see thier not for everyone and im working on an honour guard idea atm to replace it for shiggles.

Tacticals : a ten man las/melta/combi melta in flazor back squad is nice - double melta scorer in transport and a stay at home scorer with (another) lascannon i quite liked...the only way id run one tho (which not saying IVE taken one atm, but it does have merrit)

Reclusiach: i think hes bit redundant in a small death company - and for 15 points more you get a libby with prefered enemy wich is practically the same, better save, force weapon and giving your vehicles a cover save.....hes nice but id only take one if my main assault force was DC...not termies like you have.

Very true on the baals, but im finding it increasingly difficult to fit scoring units into the army, and if the razorback can do half its job and still be scoring its worth it.
But very true, also my hope is if im facing sv 3+ then ive got 3 assault units to deal with them.

Lol i was prob going over the top when i said tacts were useless but i meant it more like ull see them rarly and assault squads will deffo be the majority

wouldnt the libby be 30 pts less?

also hear me out on the Chappy + DC front, ive run DC without one and used a lib. Ive found that the lib is good but it a pshyic power and its preferred enemy not re-roll to hit (which against vehicles makes alll the difference) and on top of that re-roll to wound, the libs 5+ cover save for the LR is good but not amazing, ive found the turn u need the cover save uve prob popped smokes. 5 guys and a chappy can kill 8-9 marines on the charge average (4 of those power weapons from the chaplin)!
Lib is great for phsyic defence but im feeling that in a mech list like mine, phsyic defence is less important.

My view on the blood angel codex is that we are back to the old system of codex production, that being the newest book will always be slightly more powerful than the last one.
The Nids got some really useful and powerful units and by all means could compete against marines once more, then they bring out the Blood angels and all of a sudden the marines are back on top. Also there is now not much point taking a Dark angels army when you can just buy a Blood angels army and do alot better in games. There is part of me that wanted the Blood angels to be very hard and indeed that part of me got its wish, but when i look at the bigger picture id have to say that ballance has been thrown out the window in favour of the push for milking the noobs of their pocket money while they are in search of the hardest army they can get their hands on. On the plus side the models so far are vey nice looking but then again 20 quid for 5 DC says im converting if i bother at all.

I already have 30+ Death Company, but I start wondering WTF is going on when they can deepstrike Land Raiders and no one else can.

Yes I've convinced someone else!!

I think my baal will be turned into a flazorbak...well the flamestorm looks like a twin linked flamer and its a turret so love it. At least you get the heavy flamers in the kit as well that you'll never use so can use them for the turrets.

I like the 1500pt list, shame they aren't any 1500 pt tournaments coming up! Think I might spend the weekend speed finishing this army.

Aw Crap! Shame on me for forgetting Lemartes has a Jump Pack. Ah well make him an Elite Chappy and then pump some points elsewhere (to tired to do it now).

Astrorath is there for 4 reasons. Red Thirst on a 1-3 means more chance of fearless assault marines which will make them much more dependable. The Furious charge as you say is not that important with 3 Priests but could still be a bonus if I combat squaded. He is a bit of a beast in Combat with his S6 re-roll Inv Save Axe, perfect for killing other crutches. He is a chappy so obviously runs with the DC and gives them all the re-rolls. Finally it has to be one of my favourite 40k models of all time. He looks more like an evil space vampire than Mephiston.

O hadnt thought of that! thats not bad, although ive always felt ATSKNF is better that fearless, swings and roundabouts. Ya defo beast in combat, keep him if ur still using DC for sure! haha awesome model, easily the best of the special character models!

So not only can I not read and remember the fact that Lemartes has a Jump Pack and can't go in a Landraider, but it turns out the Astro-Jump Pack army is over by 100pts as I didn't add up correctly either!!!

No silly Deathstar but much more killing power in the army and more my style of play (lots of redundancy). The Libby and Honour Guard can DS in to double melta tanks and blast Bloodlance off. Not a huge amount of combat power in the army (Libby with his Sword is it) but I am reluctant to put fists in the small squads as 5 marines is easy meat no matter what. That said there is so much shooting and mobility I should be able to pick my fights, if any. Lastly as a side note this army has 16 Kill Points!!!

No silly Deathstar but much more killing power in the army and more my style of play (lots of redundancy). The Libby and Honour Guard can DS in to double melta tanks and blast Bloodlance off. Not a huge amount of combat power in the army (Libby with his Sword is it) but I am reluctant to put fists in the small squads as 5 marines is easy meat no matter what. That said there is so much shooting and mobility I should be able to pick my fights, if any. Lastly as a side note this army has 16 Kill Points!!!

Really like your first list, very different, could be really good but looks a bit fragile

Second list is good but id drop all the SPs and get another honour guard unit, more combat and u dont need that many bubbles, 2 should suffice.

Unfortunately you would need a second HQ choice to take the second Honour unit. Plus purely relying on them to give you the FnP/FC bubbles is risky. What happens is they don't show up with the Assault Marines do? Or they scatter too far away? Or you get crowed and it becomes too risky to DS nearby? Also an Honour Guard is only 5 models (discounting attached HQ's) and we know that 5 Marines are not that hard to take down.

Priests get to hide amongst 10 warm bodies making them more survivable and it means that each unit has is own bubble and so is not reliant on another.

If your planning to DoA every game I would suggest Dante, he is way to good in this sort of list to pass up, maybe drop a vet, a priest and the libby for him?, see the extra priest isnt needed cause you put that squad down first then whatever squads dantes with will be in 6". hit and run and the no scatter is awesome, hes not bad in combat either.

Personally Dante is a lot of points for what he does. The best thing he offers is to decrease the stats of an enemy HQ. But he himself is pretty average.

Auto hitting Deep Strike is nice but using that you want him in either a Honour Guard or Sanguinary Guard unit which is packing tons of melta weapons to make sure you land and kill a key enemy tank/elite unit.

Overall I think you would still get much more out of the Psychic defense from the Libby and the powers he can bring to the party.

Personally Dante is a lot of points for what he does. The best thing he offers is to decrease the stats of an enemy HQ. But he himself is pretty average.

Auto hitting Deep Strike is nice but using that you want him in either a Honour Guard or Sanguinary Guard unit which is packing tons of melta weapons to make sure you land and kill a key enemy tank/elite unit.

Overall I think you would still get much more out of the Psychic defense from the Libby and the powers he can bring to the party.

Fair points, ya libby psychic D is pretty important.

One last point, the list looks solid, would you consider dropping the last Van Vet and taking 3 combi-meltas on the SPs

IMHO combi-melta is better cause A you get 3 instead of 2, the 6" range of 2d6. also B you rarely want SPs to get into assault, for the first turn at least (to avoid death) so the extra attack is rather useless.

But i suppose on the cons side its only one shot per game. depends what you want
