“With a yo-ho-ho, let the wind blow free, it’s all for the life on the rolling sea!” trilled the tuneless voice of Dribbla the Goblin, from his lofty perch in the crow’s nest of the Hogwash.

“Will you belay that blasted singin’, ye stinkin’ rat!” bellowed Kap’n Mogrum from the quarter deck.

Dribbla flinched and instinctively ducked below the rim of the wooden box lashed to the peak of the main mast. “Aye aye Boss!” he yelped, then continued the shanty under his breath. Once he got his nerve back a little, and was sure that the captain was distracted by some other misbehaving crew-member, he stood up straight again and pressed his eye to the lens of his spyglass once more.

He made slow circuits of the distant horizon, pausing whenever something nicked the skyline. Most of the things he glimpsed merely disappeared when he lingered on them – just tricks of the light, larger than normal waves or flocks of sea-birds, no doubt. On the fifth rotation a dark fleck caught his attention and this time it didn’t vanish right away. He focused the spyglass and stared.

He wiped his eye after a few moments and looked again, he had to be sure before calling down – he had already pushed his luck today. The dark fleck became a dark square and he was certain. “Oh deck! On deck there! Sail ho!” he yelled.

“Where away!” called Grognog the first mate, as he jumped up onto the gunwales and clung on to the rigging. “Right astern of us.” said Dribbla and pointed to reinforce the point.

Every pair of eyes - and a few solitary ones - on board turned to look, though none on deck had much hope of seeing anything yet. The Kap’n stepped up to the rail and yelled “Heave to ye lazy dogs! Don’t just stand about gawkin’ like a pack of lubbers!” and the crew scattered from their vantage points. Sail was hurriedly taken in and the Hogwasha slowed. The Kap’n looked up at the crow’s nest again “What de’ye see Mr Dribbla?” he barked.

Rocking in a slow circle to counter the movement of the ship, so he could keep the distant sail in sight, the goblin peered through his glass until his eye streamed. “She’s hull-up now: It’s a Brigantine, square rigged and listing to port a might. I see gun-ports; maybe half a dozen.” he cried, “I don’t recognise her but she looks like an Empire ship. She’s heading south east on the port tack.”

“Mr Grognog, we will wear the ship. Set a course north east to intercept the chase.” said Mogrum. Before the portly first mate even began shouting orders the crew were galvanised into action and started rushing about ship with a purpose. The Hogwasha came about on the opposite heading and as her sails filled will Orc hands pulled lines taught to coax the very last knot of speed from her.

An hour later Grognog shifted his considerable weight nervously and looked at Kap’n Mogrum out of the corner of his eye. The swarthy, scarred and filthy pirate was staring intently at the rapidly closing ship. It had changed course since they first saw it; not even flinching at the hoisting of the black flag at the Hogwasha’s main mast, it was now heading straight for them.

“Do you recognise her Kap’n?” said the first mate at last.
“No. But she looks like she’s seen action of late.” rumbled Mogrum, “See the repairs to her hull, just at the water-line? And the foremast is jury rigged – badly too I might add.”

Grognog nodded as he squinted in the sunshine. Something was wrong with this ship, beyond the damage and lack of reaction to a pirate flag: He was worried they were pirate hunters.

As the ships came within musket range they both took in sail and hove too: turning into the wind to slow down and present broadsides to one-another.

“Ahoy Hogwasha!” came a familiar booming voice across the waves. Adm’rul Kurgan stood on the quarter deck with a pair of pistols pointed at a tired looking helmsman.

Reptilian Raiders: Cold Blooded Killers

Rumours of madmen, puzzles and hidden ancient cities stuffed full of gold treasures drew the pirate Orcs of the Ironfang Fleet back to Sartosa once more and in their minds the logical first step was to attack a the first Lizardmen they encountered. After a week long search they found Grok-nar and his band of Sauruses in the hills outside Beffardo.

Squid Hoppers bounced off towards the enemy, trying to stay between the Pirates and the missile weapons of the Lizardmen. They we cut down in no time by those same missiles.

Broadside the Giant bounded off with Wolf and Crab riding Goblins scampering along in his wake. A scouting party of Skinks fled from the Giant’s advance and Grok-nar while his Cold One mounted bodyguard struggled with the stupidity of their mounts. The few seconds of confusion allowed Broadside to deal with the heavy reptilian cavalry in typical Giant fashion – with swinging club and stompy boots.

A flock of Terradons swept down from the tropical sky and attacked the pirate gun crews after only two volleys, but with ramrod and hand-spike the hardy gunners held the winged beasties at bay for the rest of the battle!

A burst of incendiary Salamander phlegm scorched just one pirate from each of the two ship’s crews it hit, but both crews were panicked by the prospect of a flaming death and turned tail to flee.They were soon brought to their senses by the strong words and mortal threats of the Adm’rul but not before they had dangerously disrupted the Orc’s battle line.

Broadside was peppered with poisonous blowpipe darts and keeled over just as the Halibuteers crashed into a heavily armoured spear-armed Saurus unit. The Black Orcs made the wrong choice of weapon – going for Great Weapons to negate the lizard defences – but even the slow-witted creatures managed to avoid the deadly blows and inflicted crippling injuries in return. The Fishmen turned tail and took flight.

Even with Grok-nar, the enemy General, unable to take further part in the fight the Orcs knew they had suffered a solid defeat but there was enough of them left to stage a fighting withdrawal.

“Yeah, and why was he masqueradin’ as a Pirate? I don’t believe that tale of him being in exile for one minute.” said Salty Ogbad with a sneer.

“So he just turns up on a nag with a gang of chumbuckets, a shiney suit of armour and a dirty great magic ‘ammer?” said Badrot in disgust. “Where was he hiddin’ that lot?”

“I dunno, but they gave us a right thrashing. Them rockets was especially hard on the Hogwashas – if’n our gunners hadn’t mashed up the rocket crews we would have suffered even harder.” said Grognog.

Hell’s Bell and Buckets of Rats

The Ironfang Pirate Fleet landed on the south-western tip of Sartosa at dawn and swiftly moved inland. The Swordwind held this corner of the island but both the Corsairs and the Brethren of the Sea had set their sights on it today. A horde of filthy Skaven poured into the hills from their stronghold in Caprio into the mountain pass that overlooked Skull Point.

The hulking Adm’rul Kurgan took a swig of rum and passed the bottle to his first mate Grognog. They looked out over the approaching swarms as they formed up in a narrow mountain pass. With the small village of Knurt on the left flank and thick forests close in on the right, crammed into the already constricted cliff sides of a gorge, this place would be an ideal bottle-neck.

“This’ll do.” Rumbled Kurgan, “If’n we can hold them here they won’t be able to outflank us or scamper past without a fight.”

Grognog belched noisily as he nodded in agreement. At a wave of the portly first mate’s hand the pirate crews started singing their crude sea-shanties, taunting the Ratmen as they marched forward. The ship’s guns on the hill opened fire with a shattering crash.

Powder smoke swirled in the mountain winds and mixed with the foul Warpstone-polluted exhausts of the Skaven machineries. The noise of the battle grew deafening as artillery from both ends of the gorge blazed away.

There were moments when things went monumentally wrong for the Ironfang Pirates - Adm’rul Kurgan called the Waaagh! a turn too early; later on the fleet’s battle-line degenerated into a squabbling, brawling, rabble for a few desperate minutes while the Troll dribbled onto its fist. The Skaven Assassin poisoned Broadside the Giant and headed for the artillery crew.

There were times when things could not have gone better - in a series of cataclysmic explosions the Skaven Warp Lightning Cannon blew up, a Rattling gun misfired and tore itself and its crew apart, the Greyseer miscast (losing some of his magical powers and wounding himself) and his Screaming Bell backfired, killing a handful of the Skaven pushing it. Hakkbar’s Squid Hoppers dealt with the Assassin just in time and save the Goblin gunners, but at the cost of three-quarters of the Squid!

Rukbadruk’s Boyz were beaten and overrun by two units: Screaming Bell and Stormvermin, they ploughed on into Mogrum's Boyz, only for the Adm’rul’s unit to leap forward in a frenzy of over-eagerness into the flank of the regiment pushing the Screaming Bell and Kurgan single-handedly wiped them out before they had the chance to attack Mogrum’s Ladz; the other overrunning unit, the Stormvermin, were held off at cutlass-point for long enough for Mogrum's Boyz to get organised enough to give them a proper kicking. The Greyseer got murderised by Mogrum’s first mate Morsnik and Murlok the Shaman had just a single achievement: Gork went on a stompy rampage and flattened the last big unit: the Skaven Slaves.

It was a close-fought battle, the advantage swung back and forth a few times but the Skaven were left with just two Jezzails, three fleeing Globadiers and a jammed Ratling gun. The Ironfangs had two strong units, a cannon and three weakened, but still capable, units. The pirates held Knurt, the forest and the heights either side.

No tactics: Just head right at ‘em!

The familiar cry of “Sail ho!” rang out from the mast-head and the deck thundered beneath the Hogwashas’ feet as they rushed to the gunwales and swarmed into the rigging to see.

“Back to ye posts, ye lubberly dogs!” roared Kap’n Mogrum and the Orc Pirates reluctantly went back to work. “Where away?” he called to the look-out.

“Nor-nor east Kap’n” came the reply, “Boss, it looks like the Ironprow to me.”

“Prepare to wear ship Mr Grognog; we’ll go meet this newcomer: Say hello all polite, like.” said Mogrum, Grognog grinned a malevolent, toothy grin.

Mogrum gave the crew one last searing glance to make sure they were jumping to their duties before he put his one good eye to his spyglass. The bright white sails of the Ironprow showed clear against the horizon. The Alliance ship had the weather gauge – the wind at her stern - and she was bearing down on the Pirates. Within minutes she was hull-up and a great bow-wave was visible at her prow, Mogrum estimated she was making about 14 knots by the look of it.

A puff of smoke appeared at the Ironpow’s and swiftly dissipated in the wind. The booming report of the cannon was followed a fraction of a second later as the Hogwasha’s deck was shaken by a splintering double crash and two lines of Orc Pirates were smashed into a bloody pulp as the two heavy cannonballs from the Ironprow’s stern-chasers came aboard. The cries of the wounded were quickly drown-out… literally.

Mogrum cupped his hands to his be-whiskered mouth and yelled over the waters to the smaller ship that followed the Hogwasha “Ahoy the red cutter! Stay in our lee until we close, then board ’em in the smoke of our broadside!”

“Aye!” came the answering roar from the ten Orcs in the small ship.

The wind picked up and veered a point or two, so Hogwasha had to turn to port so it wasn’t heading right into the wind: Ironprow now had the wind dead astern.

“Fire as they bear!” roared Kap’n Mogrum and the Hogwasha’s broadside of carronades thundered almost simultaneously, but both shots fell short of the rapidly approaching enemy ship.

As the Ironprow came into pistol-shot range the crew of the Hogwasha got over excited and started firing their black-powder weapons inaccurately and largely ineffectively. Grognog did his best to restrain them until he saw Mogrum blast away with both of his ornate (and stolen) duelling pistols. The over-sized first mate shrugged and fired-off both of his pistols too! The return fire of crossbow bolts and handgun bullets exacted a heavier toll.

“Boarders ready!” Mogrum roared then turned a big toothy grin on the quartermaster at the helm and in a lower tone said “Give it a spin to starboard”, and the Orc hulk turned back towards the Ironprow, hit on the starboard prow and ground along, gunwale-to-gunwale with the Alliance ship, removing a good deal of the pristine paintwork.

“Boarders away!” the order was almost unnecessary as the Orc Pirates were already swarming up the side of the larger enemy ship. A ferocious battle erupted on the deck of the Ironprow as the first wave of pirates forced their way aboard, the fallen of both sides were trodden under-foot as the second wave of Orcs leapt aboard and pushed their ship-mates forwards. Pistols banged and cutlasses clashed, heads were split open and blood washed over the deck.

The red cutter swept round the Hogwasha and pulled up alongside the waste of the Ironprow. The additional weight of numbers was brought to bear on the middle of the enemy ship – effectively cutting the defenders into two groups. The Alliance captain was isolated from his reserves and his men were shaken. When the casualties among the Ironprows were clearly outnumbering those of the Hogwashas and more Orcs seemed to be flow inexorably from the Pirate hulk the Alliance captain saw no alternative and hauled down his colours.

Mogrum laughed so hard he had to hold on to the Hogwasha’s gunwales to keep himself standing. Grognog wiped a tear from his eye and tried a third time to give the order to make sail. The noise from the Hogwash’s crew, the red cutter’s and the handful of Orc Pirates who formed the prize crew over on Ironprow hadn’t quieted-down as the three ships moved away from the small island, so even when the ships were still hull-up but far, far away the taunting cries of the Orcs were still ringing in the ears of the marooned ex-crew of the Ironprow II.
