Here's a question that's just occured to me.

If a war engine (For e.g. A Landing Craft) barges into a fm and lands Btb with a couple of units, does the war engine force those units to use their CC value in the ensuing engagement? The WE would also be free to use it's own FF value on appropriate targets and doesn't neccessarily need to CC the units it's barged. Is this right?

So, if the above rule is correct:

Lets say I air assault a Tank company of Leman Russes consisting of 10 tanks. I could barge the LC into 2 tanks forcing them to use their CC value. Meanwhile the terminators onboard the LC can disembark into CC, each one tying up 2 x Leman Russ each into CC (Who wouldn't have to btb the closest tanks, since the LC already has and consequently they have lost their ZOC). Lets assume conditions are perfect and that the terminators each contact 2 tanks in addition to the LC's 2 (Who could potentially contact 8). This then means that the Tank company gets no FF attacks, just 6+ CC attacks whilst the terminators get all of their CC attacks and the LC can also use it's 4 x 3+ FF attacks, since there are enemy models in the defending unit who are not in BTB combat with the LC - despite being in Btb with the terminators.

When hits are allocated they start from the front of the unit, as CC hits are allocated first (So starting with the 2 that are in btb with the LC even though they have no terminators in contact with them and the LC has not directed any CC attacks at them) moving towards the back with the remaining FF hits from the LC allocated to any units that have not yet received a hit (But can never be put onto the 2 tanks it's in BtB with). Then the MW hits from the terminators are allocated from front to back with the same rules.

Is that right? If so, it does seem that a Landing craft and the thunderhawk are freaking lean, mean, barging machines when loaded up with assault troops Vs FF troops.

Getting one attacker onto 2 enemy targets is actually really hard as the attacker would have to enter both ZOC's at the same time and the attacker then has to take the shortest route directly towards the enemy, which in reality isn't normally going to result in the attacker contacting both models simultaneously. I know we've all done it and had it done to us, but in reality it shouldn't happen that often. Much better to barge to your maximum ability and then put the termie into contact as the second attacker. Don't forget that if you don't barge the maximum number of enemies they will count as having 2 attackers in BtB already so you can't add more units to them.

The allocation of hits from a WE in an assault do not follow the normal rules. If you elect to use CC then the hits HAVE to be allocated to units in BtB with the WE and FF hits to units not in BtB with the WE.

Hits from other units in the assault are allocated to units in BtB then everyone else, with MW being a separate round of allocation as normal.

Even though the WE, through choosing to FF, can only hit units it's not in BtB with - the units it is in BtB with will still get hits allocated to them through the Termies CC attacks and the defender doesn't get to use his superior FF value by virtue of the fact that it's in BtB with the WE - even though the war engine doesn't allocate any attacks to them.

Also, I don't see anything in the rules that says that you have to stop moving once you reach BtB. Surely you can contact one unit with one of yours and "Sweep" round with any remaining movement to catch a second, as long as you remain in Btb with the first.

Units may not enter an enemy zone of control while they
move, unless they are undertaking an engage action and
use their charge move to get into base contact with the
nearest enemy unit whose zone of control they have
entered. Once a unit has been contacted by an engaging
enemy unit, it loses its own zone of control for the rest of
that engage action (including the ensuing assault).

A maximum of two units may move into base contact
with each defender. A charging unit that enters a zone of
control must move into base contact with the nearest
enemy whose zone of control has been entered. Once a
unit has been contacted it loses its zone of control for the
rest of the assault, allowing other units to move past it.

The only pre-requisite I can see here is that you must move into contact with the nearest enemy who's zone of control you have entered. Once you've done that, you've fulfilled the criteria and can surely use any remaining movement to catch a second?

If that's not the way it's done, or someone can provide a good argument to refute this claim, then fair enough - I've no real vested interest either way.

One way of getting round the alleged restriction, with the example above, would be to try and barge as many tanks as possible with the LC and then place the Termies into btb with the remaining tanks. In practice this leaves you with a situation where the FF hits from the LC go on the units in btb with the termies but not with the LC and the termie's hits are allocated to the ones in BtB with the LC, with the MW hits being allocated once these hits have been resolved. Meanwhile all the tanks are forced to use their CC attack, rather than their FF attack.

Walking through this step by step:

1) The LC Barges 6 tanks (It's a frikking huge model and can potentially barge 8).
2) The termies deploy and pass the tanks already in Btb with the LC, as they have no ZOC by virtue of the fact that they are in btb with the LC. Each termie gets 1 tank into Btb.
3) With all tanks now in btb the Guard player gets to roll his attacks but must roll using the CC values of his Russ. Hits are allocated front to back, so starting with the terminators and working back towards the LC.
4) The space marine player rolls his attacks. The FF attacks from the LC can only be allocated to the 4 tanks it is not in base to base with. Hits from the terminators CC attacks are allocated from front to back (Starting with the units in Btb with the LC and working backwards) which actually hits units the Termies are not in CC with.
5) Once these hits have been allocated and saves have been rolled, then the MW CC attacks are allocated - again front to back same as above.

Does that sound about right?

That's dirty. And this can be repeated with thunderhawks too who can barge up to 4 units.

There has been some discussion on TC regarding front to back allocation in regard to CC hits. Many players just allow the owning player allocate hits to units in BtB first without regard to a nominal front to back.

Personally I've always played it using front to back, but again the rules can be read the other way.

As to how dirty this is in the case of a LC + Termies + Character that's 750 points so it should excel at something in the game! And that one time it get's criticalled by the russes hydra really sucks for the marine player too. Seen this happen at a tourney by the way

Landing on top of tanks to prevent them FF'ing is a pretty standard tactic for Marines.

A Thunderhawk can land on top of 3 units and still disembark troops, but if you land on top of 4 units you've just locked your troops inside! :-)

A side-effect of landing Thawks on enemy units is that as the T-hawk is in base-to-base, you should be able to allocate some hits to it regardless of which allocation method you use (Either by careful positioning, or simply because it's in B2B and is therefore "closest" to the enemy), this can help if your troops aboard have a worse save than the Thunderhawk.

If all the models are btb with something though, then surely it's just front to back?

I've also been thinking about using this particular trick with warp spiders. Since they have infiltrate they can ignore ZOC and base 2 tanks. I reckon a 1/6 drop off in effectiveness on 5 units is a worthwhile price to pay for a 1/3 drop off on 10 units in reply.
