So, it was the bristol Winter Warmer this weekend and both Curis and myself made ther long trek down to Bristol to see what the NetEA had to offer.

From the outset I knew it wasn't going to be an event to take too seriously game wise and went into it with a spirit of fun and fair play.

Game 1 I ran into Glyn G with a Black templar hoard (No aircraft at all). He mentioned at the start of the game that he was pretty rusty and hadn't played in a while. We were also running late with the start time, and 1st games always takes longer as you have to unpack your minis from the case and get in the right mind set. So we played the game and we both had fun. It took a bit longer due to rustiness and I took the time to help Glyn out and stop him from making any silly mistakes due to inexperience playing against the Eldar. At the end of turn 3 we ran out of time with no clear winner. It did look like I would likely have had the better of things in turn 4 and Glyn offered to make it an 18-14 draw to me. Since any number of things could have gone wrong though and with the spirit of the competition in mind I insisted we call it a 16-16 draw.

Very enjoyable game, played in the right spirit, for me, the day was off to a good start. It was nice to be able to put a face to the name from tac-coms and we both enjoyed our first game and had some giggles.

It was a bring and buy during lunch. Sadly we missed most of this, having to hunt around for somewhere to buy food. If I'm going to attend another of these events I'll know to bring down some lunch with me, so that I can take full advantage of what's on offer.

Game 2 was our very own Mr Evil and chaos. He was using a Vraskian Traitor army which was new to me but he tok the time to explain what everything was and what it did. It was pretty low on activations with only 8 but had some seriously scary big hard units that would require some real chewing through, including an up-gunned Reaver, reinforced armour 2BP shooting artillery, some 75cm MW shooting doom tanks (Although only 3 in a fm) and a sort of mega tank company that spits evil death at 45cm and has a couple of FF 3+ and a couple of battlecannon tanks in there too. The issue of barrages came up and although I voiced my displeasure I agreed to play it E&Cs way (Snipey barrages) after an amicable discussion. This did turn out to favour me, later on in the game as i ended up taking out his SC from an infantry fm withy a Void spinner barrage. The lack of fms did show up in the end for E&C though, after losing the tank company to a combined engagement by the Avatar and guardians with supporting fire from Aspect warriors. Really I should have won this game 2-0 on turn 3 but made the mistake of shooting and breaking his infantry blitz Guard with a void spinner before moving my own unit into position to claim the blitz. This made it possible for the broken unit to move into a position to block my Falcon unit from claiming the blitz. I will hold my hand up to having a little whinge at this point, as it did seem a bit counter intuitive to have success (Breaking a unit) to actually be a bad thing and stop you from winning but I did make it clear that I thought it was the rules that were at fault and i probably would have done the same thing myself in a similar position. To be fair, with hindsight now i'm more aware of this little trick I shall be taking steps to avoid falling prey to it again. All whinging done we played into turn 4 where i clinched the victory 3-0.

Good game, again played in the right spirit of the weekend.

After the game we had a friendly, if spirited debate about barrages that, once again failed to convince the other and agreed to disagree.

By game 3 the beer drinking is in full swing, lol. My opponent had a pretty hard-core guard army with 3 warhounds, Valkyries, Vultures tank company BTS, death strikes and a few other bits and bobs. This was a very good fun game and my opponent (Who's name i forget) was very enthusiatic and enjoyable to game with. Things looked like they were going my way turn 2 as I managed to break the storm troopers and an intermingled tank company + warhound with a triple activation, killing the warhound. The tank company failed to rally in both remaining turns and despite hitting it waith 2 void spinner and getting 5 models under the template each time I just could not score even a single hit either time! He made a spirited and gutsy come-back and at the end of turn 4 had a 2-0 win over me, unless I rallied one of my 3 broken fms in his half - which fortunately I did. We had run out of time (Which I must apologise for, as I had to make several trips to the toilet, at speed, the seal had well and truly broken and the combination of an honsty box, a pocket full of change and £2 a beer proved too much for my self restraint!), so didn't have time to count up the points left and called it a 16-16. I certainly enjoyed the game and i presume my opponent did too, as we both nominated each other as most sporting. Very animated, very fun and very tough game. Excellent end to a good day's gaming.

Heading into the awards, Flame on did rather well. Both Chris and myself came in the top 10 and were both nominated best sportsman along with 2 others. Chris won the best painted award and much to my surprise I got an honourable mention (The judges must have had experience painting horrible yellow)!

The venue was great, as was the terrain - a lot of effort had odviously gone into it and it showed. I would recommend that if anyone gets the opportunity to attend any events down at Cut and Thrust gaming in Bristol they certainly should. The evnt certainly lived up to it's reputation and was for me, more of a days gaming with new and interesting people than a competetive event.

I won't dispute that I'm an argumentative bastard, but the Valdor doom tanks are only 60cm range not 75cm, with one MW3+ shot each. :-)

With the amount of sub mm-level measuring you were doing with your air assault early on, and a bit of a tendency to be loose with measurements at other times, I thought I was in for a total "tournament style" game (Which wasn't really what I turned up for..), but you loosened up a lot after you nuked half my army at the start of turn 2. ;-)

I got far too eager in our game and over-extended too early with my tank company, a classic mistake against Eldar... plus I took a Reaver and a Tank Company just because both were pretty, so wasn't really expecting to win any games on the day (I ended up winning one, against a very new player who also brought a battle titan and a tank company!).

Very fun game regardless of the somewhat mis-matched army lists, and I'm sorry I didn't have more time just to sit and chat with you later on about other topics than template attacks.

I must admit I like the way broken units can still be useful, it adds another tactical element and the broken unit is hidiously vulnerable. The "correct" barrage rules on the other hand are just plain dumb!

With the Warp spiders air assault? I was just trying to get it right so that I wasn't doing you out of anything, as I was aiming to engage but not be shot at by the hydra but didn't want to take anything i wasn't entitled to and was trying to be as fair as possible.

I will hold my hands up to getting caught up in the moment and moving those Guardians a little bit further than they should have on their consolidate move - I would hardly describe that as "tendancy to be loose with measurements" though. I always check these things after moving the block though and push the guys back if needs be - when given the chance.

Regarding measurements I do generally have a policy of making allowances, if working out ranges etc are less than 1cm out, then i consider it to be in range, because things get knocked around the table and moved around a little bit due to dice, tape measures and table bumping etc. I also always measure my movement to and from a specific part of the model - the turrets usually for tanks or the leading edge of the base for infantry.

The tank company and Reaver were pretty, there's no denying that! Did you cast it all up yourself or were the tanks from another manufacturer?

***Which was only made possible by a "9cm" disembark from the aircraft that let you stay out of Hydra range, instead of "entirely within 5cm", which is a FAQ ruling I disagree with because I think it's a bit silly. IIRC I just nodded and said "ok" when you explained which interpretation you were using. :-)

&&&Perhaps they were on long bases, and were "partially within" 15cm of the board edge. Yeah, "within xcm" is apparently used in multiple different ways in the rulebook, just like the word "type" apparently is. ;-) I'll shut the fuck up now

I'm not the first person to deploy a bit too far forwards whilst in a rush to get going, especially when lining up along a large terrain piece. It wasn't done on purpose and was not done on purpose to my advantage. There was no advantage and actually brought them into bombard range. The comment was regarding 2 infantry being able to use one vehicle as cover. This is mentioned no-where in the book and to be quite honest was a response to your attitude which got my back up, as i was getting a bit pissed off. I made the joke (Which in no way implied that i use different interpretations depending on which is most to my advantage) in an attempt to bring some levity to the game and also point out that you follow the letter of the rules sometimes (Nasty barrages - still debatable) but not others.

Regarding the air assault, I was all ready to just to take the Hydra shots and was just playing with the measurements to see if i could get away with doing the engagement without having to. I made this quite clear and it was you yourself that moved the Warp spiders so that they could do it, giving your consent to doing it that way, when i'd already made it clear that i was prepared to take the AA shots if it wasn't possible.

Coming online and trying to make me look a cunt does us both a diservice and actually looks rather pathetic.

I find that it's best to be unambigiously and categorically apologetic online, as getting across that you're genuinely sorry on an internet forum can be very hard, and I've had enough experience of flame wars over on TacComms to last a lifetime... at this point in life, I'd sooner apologise for every slight (However minor) once it's pointed out to me, as an untreated wound (Again, however minor) does have a tendency to fester.

For what it's worth, there's more than one package of "sorry for being a douche!" toy soldiers I've sent out in the past, as buying a pint or two for someone over the internet isn't all that easy. :-)
