Shadow Scorpions (Scions of Iron) vs. Black Legion- 3000pts

Thoroughly enjoyable and very close. A chance to use Predators and Land Raiders competitively, where they are poor cousins in the standard Marine list.

My list was:

Deployment

Well we both left our home objectives largely undefended, working on a refused flank. I can only give my reasonings and tactics in this battle report, I'm sure Darren will impart his decisions.
I deployed to avoid his army, as I think Marines are too fragile to hit an enemy head-on, besides which I spent a lot of pts on being mechanised and fast, kinda pointless to use this mobility to slam into the enemy- bringing their meal to them.

First pic show most of my deployment. With a Chaos Spacecraft arriving turn 1, I kept my army within supporting range of each other. Out of fear of the bombardment I also avoided putting stuff on my Blitz (visible next to the road).

To the left of the above pic, my Whirlwinds behind cover. The second Tactical Predator Annihilator formation, and behind the Tank factory the second Land Raider Tactical.

The Chaos deployment is a bit sparse since a good chunk is off-board.
The Deathwheel BTS on the left flank, a Garrision Retinue on Overwatch in the foreground.

On the right flank, a Forlorn Hope on the road, Raptors on far right flank.

Turn 1

I win Initiative, first action of the game see's the Whirlwinds open up.

Hitting the Retinue.

The Retinue reacts by Marshalling- shuffling forward.

My second actions sees a Tactical Predator Annihilator formation double forward, putting pressure on the Retinue, whilst staying out of sight of the Deathwheels (those green bases are forest...).

The dreaded Chaos Cruiser looms over the battlefield. The Pinpoint attacks have no targets, the Bombardment hits my Blitz- which is mercifully empty.

The Chaos Retinue and Forlorn Hope Drop Pods slam down. Suddenly my Tactical Predator Annihilator seems isolated.

Darren wisely retains with the Forlorn Hope to engage the Tactical Predator Annihilator.

Which pays off.

My third action is to strafe the Rhino mounted Forlorn Hope, breaking them.

In retaliation the Hell Talons attempt to intercept the Thunderhawk, without result.

My Land Raider Tactical formation doubles forward to put pressure on the Raptors.

The Raptors react by Marshalling, taking cover in the ruins.

My second, and only remaining, Tactical Predator Annihilator formation doubles forward to finish off the Forlorn Hope. However, all those lascannons are useless against infantry, and one Forlorn Hope Chaos infantry survives.

The Drop Pod Chaos Retinue (left) puts fire down on the Tactical Predator Annihilator.

The massive Tactical Predator Destructor (BTS) doubles forward to put pressure on the Raptors, breaking them, they flee towards my Whirlwinds.

The Deathwheels double to get into action, putting fire on the Tactical Predator Annihilator formation.

I retaliate with my second Thunderhawk, putting fire on the Deathwheels.

State of play at the end of turn 1. Very eventful turn. The Chaos army has moved to occupy my objectives, whilst I have moved to occupy theirs, the two forces spinning around each other.
My hope at this stage is now that the Chaos drop troops are down, I will have the mobility advantage and can use it to harass them.

Turn 2

Turn 2 see's the Terminators arrive in the midst of my mechanised advance. This could really throw a spanner in the works for me.

Mercifully I win the Initiative again, and the Termies are at my mercy. First of all I double the Tactical Predator Annihilator formation in the hope of getting into a crossfire position.
In hindsight, this was pointless- the Termies have Thick Rear Armour, the lone rallied Forlorn Hope forced me to take a ridiculously wide drive around it due to it's 10cm ZoC, and finally I planned to Engage with the other formation anyway.

I retain and Engage with the Tactical Predator Destructor (BTS). Despite my handful of dice the damage inflicted is pitiful, however I've stacked so many things in my favour that the Termies lose and only the uber-Oblit survives being Fearless.
It sits broken in the middle of my army, and would prove to be a real ballache.

The Deathwheels retaliate by Advancing and firing on the Tactical Predator Annihilator.

My Land Raider formation opens up on the Raptors, breaking them before they can threaten my Whirlwinds.

They flee once again.

The Retinue on foot doubles to claim one of my objectives.

The Drop Pod Retinue marches to put pressure on my Whirlwinds.

My other Land Raider Tactical formation doubles moving into the action, putting shots on the Deathwheels.

The Drop Pod forlorn hope marches back toward the Chaos objectives, hoping to deny them to my mechanised attack.

The Hell Talons fail to show up, leaving my Thunderhawks to strafe the Deathwheels. Those tough buggers take some damage but not much.

The Whirlwinds flee from the Drop Pod Retinue, putting some ineffectual fire on them from a distance.

State of play at the end of turn 2. Still the clearly visible concentration of both armies opposite each other, having circled.

Turn 3

The Raptors fail to rally, fleeing even more. They've now almost managed to fly diagonally across the whole board.

The Oblit annoyingly rallies, and Darren wins Initiative, this isn't good.

A Daemon assisted engagement.

With Supporting fire from two other formations, I broke the Oblit..again. But was broken by casualties in return.

Darren retains with the Deathwheels, sustaining on the Tactical Predator Annihilator with painful results. I'd been dreading the Deathwheels moving to contest the Chaos blitz, so when they didn't, this was a small price to pay.

I get my first action, sustaining with the Whirlwinds on the Drop Pod Retinue- with minimal effect again.

My Thunderhawks strafe the Deathwheels again with minimal effect. The Hell Talons arrive and put fire on a Thunderhawk causing a wound. The pics are getting thinner now, the camera battery is dying as usual.
My Tactical Predator Annihilator formation Marshals onto the Blitz. The Drop Pod Forlorn Hope marches to contest the Blitz. The Tactical Predator Destructor (BTS) doubles to shoot up the Forlorn Hope, breaking it.
I now have Blitz and another objectives- giving 2 Objective Points.

The Drop Pod Retinue moves to hold the Blitz, whilst the foot Retinue Overwatches on another Imperial objectives- giving Darren 2 Objective Points so far. A draw.

Turn 4
The Oblit again rallies, Darren again wins the Initiative. You know what's coming.

With the pictures rapidly dwindling, my memory gets vaguer.
A lot of pressure is put on my BTS, the Deathwheels sustaining (and mercifully not contesting the objectives), etc. But that 12 strong formation is very stubborn.
With us both on 2:2, I need to contest an Imperial objective.

I march with the Land Raiders. A heroic charge down the road, but both Retinues are in Overwatch and open up, breaking the Land Raiders which then turn tail and flee behind the forest (centre of pic)- glorious but foolish.

It's now all up to my Tactical BTS, if I March I can reach the Imperial objective, contesting it and making it a 2:1 in my favour.

I roll a 1, my first failed activation of the game so I can't complain too much. But with that failed, the game ends a draw. 2:2.

Working out VP's, I've 'won' on a mere 100-150pts difference.

A great game, could have gone either way. I think I got off lightly by hitting the Termies before they hit me. I also think the Deathwheels not contesting my objectives was a small mercy- though I'd have had a good go of smacking them if they did get that close.

Aye good game, against a realistic marine army.

To justify my refused flank tactics.
As the blitz and both of my objectives were nicely concentrated in one area I decided to go all out in that area. The plan (TM) was to offer minimal resistance on the other flank (using the mobile Raptors, and being able to draw in the Termis and Deathwheels if needed), hoping that SI would spread his stuff out a bit more evenly, so I could smash what was in and around my objectives whilst holding off the loyalists from my blitz (as half of my formations aren't on the board at the start of the game, deployment is quite an exercise in second-guessing). As it was the marines had exactly the same idea, and we ended up on opposite sides of the table . In retrospect the Deathwheels could have pretty easily contested the Blitz, but in the heat of the moment I was wary of giving away the BTS and the crucial points that they represented.

Overall very good game, both had the same idea and neither of us managed to thwart the other in his plans. If anything this game highlights how location and mobility can be more important in Epic than killing the enemy.

Really quite keen on the Scions of Iron list, not sure if the Thunderhawks are a little bit over costed for what they do, but this could be due to the lack of armour in my list (it basically goes from nothing to 4+RA Fearless war engines with nothing in between). Against formations of light vehicles of Ork and Eldar tanks I could seem them being pretty nasty.
